Ok so here are some of the frequently asked questions for uTag

uTag Explained in Video

What is it?

uTag is an internet service that aims to reward people for the value they pass on to the people in their online social networks. Instead of being punished for providing links to external material that may be of interest to their readers, uTaggers can now, in one simple step, tag their outbound links and share in the rewards of having people click on them.

    What's the point?

Bloggers, Tweeters, and plenty of other people pluck the best parts out of the stream and serve them to us on a platter. They save us all the time and effort that we can't afford, and until now they haven't been compensated for it. We want to see them rewarded.

      Why should I care?

If you have something to say that other people want to hear, then you are providing a service. Your recommendations, in the form of external links, are valuable. With uTag you can quickly and easily turn them into an income stream.

        How does it work?

When someone clicks a link that you've uTagged, they'll see an unobtrusive advertising banner across the top of the page it takes them to.

What do I have to do?

When posting a link to an external site in your blog, tweet or status update, go to http://ut.ag/ and paste it in the form along with your PayPal email. Include the generated uTag in your update, and that's all there is to it. The cash will appear in your account at the end of each month.

So what happens if someone reposts my link?

Every click on the uTag you generated goes to the original creator of the link.
Anyone can create their own link to any page, including the one you recommended.

Are the Ads actually relevant to the page I'm linking to? I mean they're in a different frame.

Yes! Through some programming wizardry Google treats the ad panel much the same as if it was inside the page you are linking to. So all the ads will be highly relevant to the site the user is viewing. That's why our CPM is so high.

              Are you guys evil?

Only a little bit. It may seem distasteful to try to make a buck off the hard work of people who have been generously donating their advice and influence up until now, but we see it as providing a service to them. Bloggers and microbloggers are helping out a lot of people by pulling the diamonds out of the rough of the Web. We want them to be rewarded for their efforts.

              But I hate ads.

We know, but ours are really unobtrusive. They don't interrupt the browsing experience, and on every ad we deliver, there is a button to close the ad and a button to go back to where you came from.

How does the money part work?

You nominate your PayPal email address when you create the link, and whenever anyone follows it, you get the credit.

              When will I be paid?

At the end of each month, we tally up the number of clicks that have gone to ads we've served, and distribute the earnings proportionally.

So what's in it for you guys?

We take a commission on the ad revenues generated. We think about 30% is fair when you go through the web.

Do you have a public API?

                You bet, it's here.

Does Cherry flavour mess with my site?

What Cherry does is rewrite external links on the fly, and doesn't change anything permanently or visually. Take out the single line of JavaScript and it's back to normal.

What if I use a Twitter client?

We are working with client developers to add uTag capability to the clients.
We're offering revenue sharing with the developers as well, so any developers who integrate uTag into their clients will make their own cut of the ad revenue, we're thinking around 15% .
We intend to pay this out of our take so you still get the same as if you use the Vanilla or Cherry flavour. Not bad when the client does the work and all you have to do is enter your email in the client.
